The New Moon marks the first lunar phase, when the Moon and Sun have the same ecliptic longitude. A New Moon welcomes the beginning of a new cycle. To welcome the new. To welcome change. This is a powerful time for manifesting and for focusing on the things you would like to attract into your life.

During the Full Moon we cleared away the weeds and prepared the earth (our soul) for planting. The New Moon is now the time to plant the seeds that we are wanting to grow, and over the month ahead it’s time to care for and water them.

It’s believed that as the New Moon grows, so does the intention – which is a really beautiful way to look at it.

There is no right or wrong way to do a New Moon ritual, the most important thing is that you come from a pure place of gratitude and love in your heart.

I personally love to do a house cleansing on the New Moon. It clears away blocked energy and replaces it with lovely new fresh vibes. I also like to write an intention for the month – something I would like to improve, attract or change. I create a little altar that I keep the intention on, or, if I decide to burn the intention in the fireplace, I will choose an oracle card to keep on the altar as a reminder and anchor to the intention.

A ritual really is something that is done with intention, so any action you do you can turn into a ritual.

If you are new to the concept of a New Moon ritual, I have created the below as a guide to inspire you on your own New Moon journey. Remember, it doesn’t have to be anything grand, it just has to be meaningful and well intentioned.

The potency of the New Moon lasts for a couple of days before and after. So, if you don't have a chance to do a ritual on the date of the New Moon, you can still harness her energy either side.

Clear the negative energy from your aura and space so you are now free to bring in the new. I like to use a smoke cleanse like Australian native dried plants or incense, or a flower or crystal essence spray (if you’re pregnant, check to see what is safe to use) and go from room to room bringing a blessing into the home and clearing out the old energy.

You might even like to vacuum or sweep your house as a way to move stuck energy, saying a house blessing as you go. You are sweeping away all that no longer needs to be in your home. This in itself is a lovely protection and cleansing ritual.

2. GROUND...

Bring yourself into the present. Focused breathing and meditation helps with grounding yourself to your protected space.

I like to sit on the floor or chair and imagine my feet are forming roots into the ground.

3. CREATE...

An altar is the perfect way to create a tangible ‘vision board’ - a space to anchor you to your intention. A daily visual reminder. It’s a sacred special place.

Every altar I have in my house doesn’t look like an ‘altar’. In fact, if you were to come to my home you would just think I have created nice little pockets around the place. It might be a few crystals and a flower next to a photo of an Ancestor. Or a crystal ball with an oracle card and a candle. No one has to know what it means except you.

4. MANIFEST (Intention is everything)...

Set intentions that you want to manifest for the next month ahead. Be clear and positive and it’s so important to come from a place of gratitude. After all, nothing positive was created from an ungrateful heart.

Intention is everything when it comes to manifesting. A great example comes back to ‘love’ – if you are wanting to attract love, yet you aren’t in love with yourself first, then there is a vibration misalignment that will make it nearly impossible to attract the kind of love you are wanting. So, a great place to start is manifesting your own self-love and gratitude towards yourself. Creating a ‘self-love’ altar with the intention ‘I love and value myself’ is a beautiful way you can remind yourself each day of your commitment to loving yourself and is also telling the Universe that you respect yourself. You’ll then find that by showing yourself love, others will want to do the same – a beautiful side effect.

This is a really nice time to remind yourself of all the things you already have in your life to be grateful for. Like attracts like, so the more you acknowledge all the wonderful things you have to be grateful for, the more you will attract to be grateful for.

This is important to think about before you start the ritual.

Sit in a comfortable position and with a candle lit, breathe in love and exhale anything that no longer serves you. Take as many breaths as you feel is needed to bring you into a state ready to write your intentions.

Take your paper and write the things you are wanting to attract / manifest. Feel the abundance like it already exists and use statements like ‘I am’ rather than ‘I will’ - ‘I am’ puts you immediately into a state of abundance as you are telling the Universe that you are open, ready and aligned to receive.

Once you have sat in your sacred space and written your intentions, place it on your altar and take a few grateful breaths. Continue to look at your altar over the month with love.

6. CLOSE...

Take a moment in gratitude to thank the Universe and Mother Moon for showing up to support you.

There is no right or wrong way to do a ritual, so if you are intuitively drawn to doing something different, make sure you follow your heart. How it makes you feel is the most important ingredient to any ritual.

Once a month in Melbourne, I hold space for women in circle to create their New Moon intention. If this is something you would like to be a part of, contact me at
